Work has been continuing at the fort with the lottery works and the new project of casemate 4.
There is still the ongoing problem of water entering the lift pit within the East Magazine, different materials are being tried to stop this but we think we are below the water table as we are about 25ft below ground level. There are signs that the Victorians had this problem from day 1, we continue to find the answer. Meanwhile the artist Johnny, is progressing well with the children’s interactive area and is doing his best to complete this for our main open day July 19th. The steps going down to the East magazine are also being worked on to replace the missing bull nosed tiles, we are getting there but its a slow progress.
Casemate 4 is progressing well, the supporting walls have been rebuilt, sole plate and joists have been installed, and now the floorboards are down in position, the fire place has been cleaned up and a new york stone hearth has been put in place. The exterior wall and sills are in place and the bespoke joinery has been ordered. The joinery is a 3-4 month lead in time but this will mean that we will have it weatherproof before winter and can work inside.
